Medal of Honor: M. Hanna

MARCUS HANNA

Sergeant, US Army; 50th Massachusetts Infantry

Born: 3 November 1842, Bristol, Maine
Died: 21 December 1921

Citation: Voluntarily exposed himself to a heavy fire to get water for comrades in rifle pits.



Notes: On 28 Jan 1885 Hanna was chief lighthouse keeper at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, when the schooner Australia was wrecked on the rocks nearby. He was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for heroism in saving the lives of two of its crew. USCGC Marcus Hanna (WLM 554) was named in his honour.
