Citation: During the action at Vredefort [South Africa] on the 24th July, 1900, Captain House went out under a heavy cross fire and picked up a wounded man, and carried him to a place of shelter.(London Gazette Issue 27320 dated 4 Jun 1901, published 4 Jun 1901.)
Note: Captain Howse was the first person serving with the Australian Forces to be awarded the Victoria Cross.
