Essential SF and fantasy

First, this post discusses the results of the “20 essential science fiction books of the past 20 years” panel from Denvention 3. I haven't read a single one of the books on the "consensus list."

That was followed by this post about the 20 essential fantasy books of the past twenty years. The "His Dark Materials" series, by Philip Pullman (Northern Lights*, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) are the only books mentioned that I've read.

Oh, well. So many books, so little time....
