Citation: Voluntarily carried a wounded officer off the field from between the lines [at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on 13 Dec 1862]; while doing this he was himself wounded.Note: Donoghue's brother, Pte Patrick Donohoe, 9th Lancers, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Bolundshahur, India, on 28 Sep 1857.
